The reporting location for this position is Sacramento, CA. This position will work under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory).

The California Ocean Pr otection Council (OPC) is hiring an Environmental Scientist to advance strategic priorities related to sea level rise, marine debris, offshore wind, and other stressors to coastal resilience. The Environmental Scientist will work in OPC’s Climate Change Program and will have a specific focus of advancing local and regional sea level rise planning and adaptation across the state through the OPC Senate Bill 1 Sea Level Rise Adaptation Grant Program. Additional areas of focus include marine debris, offshore wind, and other coastal resilience stressors as needs emerge.

The Environmental Scientist will be responsible for collaborating with other OPC staff, state and federal regulatory agencies, California Native American tribes, academic scientists, non-profits, community representatives, and others, on topics pertaining to sea level rise planning and adaptation, marine debris, offshore wind, and other coastal resilience stressors. The Environmental Scientist will also be responsible for grant and contract management including developing scopes of work and budgets, tracking deliverables, and coordinating with grantees. Overall, this role will be responsible for supporting implementation of OPC’s mission and California Natural Resources Agency’s (CNRA) policy initiatives, which include embedding equity and environmental justice into programs and actions to support statewide efforts related to coastal resilience.

Applicants should have a strong scientific and policy background, working knowledge of coastal and ocean issues and stakeholders in California, experience working on projects or research related to coastal resilience, sea level rise, marine debris, or offshore wind, the ability to become proficient in new topics, and excellent written and verbal communication skills. The ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks is a must.

Working Conditions

Location:

This position requires reporting in person at Natural Resources Agency headquarters located at 715 P Street in Sacramento for a minimum of two times a week. OPC staff are currently required at headquarters a minimum of two days a week, on Mondays and Tuesdays. 

Flexible Work Schedule:

This position is considered Remote Centered which means the incumbent would telework 50% or more of the time within a work month from an alternate work location. The incumbent can telework with a management approved telework agreement and schedule. This position is eligible for partial teleworking in accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy, but the incumbent will be required to report to the office as needed/required.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks.

3. Describe your experience bringing together diverse partners, such as agencies, community groups, or subject-matter experts, to work toward a shared goal. How did you manage coordination and collaboration across a range of perspectives, and what was the outcome?
